SUMMARY:EmuDRop: A Minimalistic, Hardware-based Emulation Detection Approa
 ch through Intel Reserved Opcodes
DESCRIPTION:Kaiyuan Rong (Tsinghua University); Ke Fang and Pengfei Qiu (K
ey Laboratory of System Software (Chinese Academy of Sciences) and State K
ey Laboratory of Computer Science, Institute of Software, Chinese Academy
of Sciences); and Dapeng Ju and Dongsheng Wang (Tsinghua University & Zhon
gguancun Laboratory)\n\nEmulation-based dynamic analysis detects malicious
software by observing runtime behavior in a controlled environment. \nMal
ware increasingly adopts evasion techniques to recognize such environments
and hide malicious activities. \nIn this paper, we propose EmuDRop, a min
imalistic emulation-detection attack that exploits Intel reserved opcodes.
\nEmuDRop leverages microarchitectural differences between real hardware
and emulators to identify emulated execution. \nWe reverse-engineer reserv
ed opcodes, characterize their microarchitectural effects, and evaluate Em
uDRop on five Intel CPU cores and QEMU, a widely used and representative e
mulator.\nThe results show that EmuDRop reliably identifies emulated envir
 onments.\n\nTopics: Quantum\n\nTrack: DES6. Quantum Computing, Systems\n\n
