SUMMARY:Janus: Compiler-Based Defense Against Transient Execution Attacks
 Using ARM Hardware Primitives
DESCRIPTION:Ciyan Ouyang, Peinan Li, Yubiao Huang, Dan Meng, and Rui Hou (
Institute of Computing Technology, CAS)\n\nWe present Janus, a compiler-ba
sed security framework that mit-\nigates transient execution attacks like
Spectre and control-flow\nhijacking on ARM64 platforms. Janus integrates s
peculative execu-\ntion and control flow dependencies with PA modifiers, u
sing PA and\nBTI microarchitectural features to prevent control-flow specu
lation\nattacks and secure both control flow and speculative execution\nth
rough existing control-flow integrity mechanisms. To optimize\nperformance
, Janus minimizes overhead by merging defense opera-\ntions across differe
nt defense layers (modifier fusion) and reusing\nregisters of protected va
riables (carrier reuse), while maintaining\nstrong security guarantees. Ev
aluation on SPEC CPU2017 shows\nan average performance overhead of 3.85%,
with real-world appli-\ncations exhibiting overheads ranging from 2.97% to
7.80%. Janus\noffers effective speculative execution security and low per
formance\nand code size overhead, making it a robust solution for ARM-base
 d\nsystems.\n\nTopics: Quantum\n\nTrack: DES6. Quantum Computing, Systems\
