Innovations for the Next Frontier: Space Edge AI and Orbital Data Centers
DescriptionSpace systems are entering a new phase in which onboard intelligence, autonomous decision-making, and large-scale in-orbit computing are becoming mission-critical. From ultra-low-power edge AI enabling real-time RF signal understanding and sensor fusion to emerging orbital data center concepts supporting scientific computing and large-model execution, future platforms must process increasing data volumes locally while operating under severe constraints in size, weight, and power (SWaP), radiation exposure, thermal variability, and communication bandwidth. These demands require a fundamental rethinking of electronic system design across the full hardware and design stack. This session explores architectural and hardware innovations enabling secure, reliable, radiation-resilient, and SWaP-efficient space computing across the edge-to-data-center continuum. Topics include heterogeneous chiplet architectures and advanced 3D heterogeneous integration, radiation-aware and rad-hard design methodologies, emerging computing paradigms such as analog in-memory computing and spiking neural architectures, resilient memory and high-speed interconnect systems, hardware-aware neural compression for resource-constrained platforms, and system-level trade-offs among performance, reliability, security, and SWaP in mission-critical scientific and AI workloads. By bridging advances in architecture, packaging, novel computing paradigms, AI acceleration, validation, and resilience engineering, this session highlights how next-generation electronic design can enable scalable, energy-efficient, and trustworthy space computing infrastructure in harsh environments.
